Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL)
Among top automobile companies in India, Maruti Suzuki India is the country’s largest passenger car maker.
It was established in 1981, initially it was known as Maruti Udyog.
After some time, the Government of India made a partnership with a Japanese car manufacturer Suzuki Motor Corporation and renamed it Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL).
Now it is a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan with 56.2% stake in Maruti Suzuki India.
The company is engaged in the business of manufacturing and selling passenger vehicles in India.
Maruti Suzuki first made its debut with the Maruti 800.
Maruti Suzuki today has a huge portfolio of 16 car models with over 150 variants.
It has a long list of cars ranging from small cars like Alto 800, Alto K10 to luxury car sedan Ciaz.
The company has two plants at Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana and a state-of-the-art R&D center in Rohtak (Haryana).
Tata Motors
Tata Motors is a major company of Tata Group, one of the largest conglomerates in India.
Tata Motors is the largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in India.
Apart from this, this company also manufactures many other types of vehicles (trucks, buses and defense vehicles etc.).
It was established in 1945 by JRD Tata. Earlier this company was known as Telco (Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited).
The business of Tata Motors is spread in many countries.
In 2008, Tata Motors bought the famous UK brand Jaguwar and Landrover from a car manufacturer named Ford.
These two products together are known as jlr (Jaguwar and Land Rover) which account for about 80% of the income of Tata Motors.
In 2004, Tata Motors acquired Korea’s largest truck manufacturer Daewoo Commercial Vehicles, which exports its trucks to more than 60 countries.
Tata Motors has 10 manufacturing plants established in India. Apart from this, its plants have also been established in many other countries.
Bajaj Auto
Bajaj Auto is a major company of Bajaj Group which is mainly involved in manufacturing of 2 wheeler and 3 wheeler vehicles.
It is the world’s fourth largest company in the manufacture of 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers. This company exports its vehicles to more than 70 countries.
It was established in 1926 by Jamna Lal Bajaj. Rahul Bajaj is currently the chairman of Bajaj Auto and he took over the business of Bajaj Auto in 1965.
Among 2 wheelers, Bajaj CT, the Platina, and the Pulsar, Avenger, KTM Duke are some of the most popular motorcycle brands. Now this company has also brought the electric variant of its old popular scooter brand Chetak in the market. Apart from 3 wheelers like autorickshaw, in 2019 bajaj auto brought its first small car (Quadricycle – Qute) which was slightly bigger than autorickshaw in size. In Financial Air 2020, the company had sold about 1000 cars and they had tied up with Uber to increase its sales.
Bajaj Auto has a total of 3 manufacturing plants (Waluj, Chakan, Pantnagar) established in the country from where it manufactures 6.3 million vehicles every year.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd
Mahindra & Mahindra Limited is a flagship company of the Mahindra Group. Which was founded in 1945 by two brothers named KC Mahindra and JC Mahindra, together with Malik Ghulam Mohammad, the city of Ludhiana in Punjab. Initially it used to be a steel company and it was named Mahindra & Mohammed. Later, after the independence of India, Mohammad went to Pakistan and got separated from this business, then in 1948 its name was changed to Mahindra & Mahindra.
Mahindra & Mahindra is one of the largest vehicle manufacturing companies in the country. This company manufactures many types of motor vehicles like two wheeler, 3 wheelers, 4 wheelers, SUVs, truck, bus, tractor etc. This company manufactures the fourth largest passenger vehicle, second largest commercial vehicle and largest small commercial vehicle (LCV) in India’s domestic market. Apart from this, it has a 40% share in the domestic tractor industry. This company is ruling the tractor industry for the last 40 years.
At present, Mahindra & Mahindra has 68 manufacturing plants established all over the world, out of which 41 plants are present in India, where various types of vehicles and other machines related to it are manufactured. The remaining 27 plants are located in different countries of the world like USA, Turkey, UAE, Algeria etc.
In 1999, Mahindra & Mahindra bought Gujarat Tractors from the Government of Gujarat and changed its name to Gromax Agri Equipment Limited, and their tractors started selling in the market under the name Trakstar.
In 2007, M&M acquired Punjab Tractor Limited (PTL), after which PTL joined M&M, under which they launched a tractor named Swaraj (2009), which became very popular among farmers.
Some of the most popular products of M&M in the market are Bolero, Scorpio, XUV500, swaraj etc.
Eicher Motors Limited
Eicher Motors is the flagship company of the Eicher Group. This company mainly manufactures motocycle and commercial vehicle. The famous Motocycle company Royal Enfield is a subsidiary of Eicher Motors, whose motorcycles are famous all over the world.
This company was first established in 1948 in the name of Goodearth Company, which was involved in the business of tractors. From 1952-1957, this company had sold 1500 tractors. After this Eicher Tractor Corporation of India Ltd was established in 1958. In 1959, this company made its first indigenous tractor and it was the first tractor in India which was made in its country and it was manufactured in the factory of Faridabad.
After this the company incorporated Eicher Tractor Corporation of India Pvt. Ltd. The name was changed to Eicher Tractors India Ltd.
In 1982, Eicher Motors entered into an agreement with the Japanese company Mitsubishi to manufacture Light Commercial Vehicles and was originally Eicher Motors Ltd. was established in 1982.
In 1990 Eicher Goodearth bought 26% stake in Enfield India Ltd and in 1993 it became the largest shareholder in Enfield with 60% equity shareholding. In 1994 Enfield India Ltd. The name was changed to Royal Enfield Motors Ltd.
In 2005, Eicher Motors incorporated the tractor and engine business into TAFE Motors & Tractors Ltd. sold to (TMTL) | In 2008, Eicher Motors established VE Commercial Vehicles Limited (VECV) with the Swedish company Volvo Group, under which the company manufactures heavy-capacity trucks and buses under the name VE-Series.
90% of Eicher Motors’ income comes from Royal Enfield. This company manufactures midweight motorcycles (250-750 cc) and has a 96% market share in this segment.
Siddharth Lal is the MD and CEO of Eicher Motors and the credit goes to him for bringing the company to this level today.
